We had a Telco meeting concerning a demark refeed. The customer has an existing fiber & copper feed from the telco. The fiber feed is for centrex lines on campus and the copper is for loop starts and T1/PRI circuits. We are moving all the centrex lines to the PBX and buying the existing copper feed from the telco for on campus use. The telco is saying they will need to install a new copper feed and will remove the fiber feed. Here's my questions. Isn't there any way to deliver T1/PRI circuits via the existing fiber? It doesn't seem right to remove the fiber and pull in a copper feed to replace it.

As with any area, the Telco can set it's own standards and are tariffed usually by your corporation commission. If their is nothing in the tariff regarding supporting T1/PRI then you have to take it the way they choose to engineer it, unless they can offer it for a price (usually not). But if your service can be SIP, they would might have to bring it in on fiber. See https://www.cs.columbia.edu/sip/

Yes they can. All they will do is bring the fiber into a mux at the D-marc. From there it will be carried on copper.

Huh? Thanks for the input "just about through" and welcome aboard, but what does that mean? "Apples and oranges"? Are you implying that this can't be done? If so, I strongly disagree. Telcos have been using fiber for just about everything for decades.
Any circuit or circuits that can be delivered via a T1 can be delivered over fiber. Any POTS line can also be delivered over fiber. It's all a matter of the electronics installed at each end of the span.
Like Mgere said, it can be done. Don't listen to anything otherwise. Voice, Data and Video are all just packets of information that can be carried by a broad means of transport media.

I am taking the simple approach and answers here. Yes it can be done if you buy the equipment to let it be done. The carrier won't supply the equipment to do it its more of a customer side thing. So no it can't be done by the carrier, but yes it can be done with extra equipment.
