Jeff: That's why I said it's fine if you're making do with existing wiring. In some situations, it just doesn't make sense to run a new cable when you can steal pairs from another cable. This isn't one of those situations though. It isn't just a MAC, he's doing a bunch of cabling anyways, and you never regret having an extra cable or two.

One suggestion Sniffy: If you have a vendor that you normally use for your phone system, do them the courtesy of telling them you're recabling. They may have some suggestions or requests based on their experience with your particular site. Better than calling a tech out after the fact and hearing "It's too bad I didn't know you were running cable, I would have told you to....."

Thanks for all the replies. Bill, Skip and Hal, if you could tell by the topic "say you'd...", your 1st 3 replies weren't what I wanted to hear. I thought the idea of using multiple pairs of one cable was just dandy. (More experience with ethernet wiring which I would never share a run!)

Jeff, I did have a long cord running baseboard around to the fax and since I was rewiring the run, thought I'd get rid of that problem but it created another one in separate plates.

I ended up doing the right thing and ran 2 home runs. I only had one box and didn't want to estimate and run short (or way over) so I pulled one run and a nylon cord together then cut and tied off to the cord and pulled the 2nd. I used 22 ga 4 pair Cat 5e - it seemed reasonable at Home Depot. I'm pleased after having run 2 for the expandibility alone. Thanks for the suggestions.

So now, at the wiring block, the quad was punched down from top to bottom: GR/RD/BK/YL/WH/BL. the ESI phone was on the GR/RD and the fax was on the WH/BL. I don't know if that order is correct to standards. I do know how to match things back up. To adhere to standards with the new wire, can someone advise the order on a punchdown block for new colors of wires? I have BL/BL-WH/OR/OR-WH/GR/GR-WH/BR/BR-WH. Thanks again.

Whoops the first reply may be lost. You were close but the Tip and Ring is reversed. The paired cable order is Blue/Orange/Green/Brown with the whites going first.

They translate to jacks in the same order that they were punched down on the wiring block. I always terminate a minimum of 2 pairs to the jacks, leftover analog key system and Panasonic days.

It will be nice to be able to add something to that second jack later and not have to create more of a mess. You done it right and thats what you have.
