They do have reverse amps to Hal. Most companies don't like using them because they amplify all of the crap going back out into the system. If the system is a good closed system they are just fine. We use 15db forward and 10db reverse all of the time.

Yeah I know they do but I don't feel competent to mess with that since I have no test equipment, at least nothing past the analog dinosaur days. My Avantek SLM (the competitor and better than Wavetek back then) weighs 25 pounds, only goes to 300Mhz and cost $2500 back in the 80's. I keep looking at the Trilithic 860 but I can't justify the cost because we really don't do CATV right now. I use the set top box diagnostics which give a lot of the same information but you can't see what is going on at the GB for instance as far as MER goes. That would tell you about that crap.
So for now I'll take my own advice and let the cable techs fight with this since I can't charge anybody for it. Doesn't cost me anything either.
