Jeff - did I miss something? Now I've got to go back and reread the OP. Did he say this was for House Cable!

I assumed (I know, I know!) that the request for a patch panel was to interconnect the incoming Telco trunks with a PBX or KSU.

Perhaps my assumption was colored by a recent favor I did for a friend where I looked at an old AT&T installation where they crimped modular heads onto pieces of quad, x-connect wire, scrap, etc. to connect to a KSU (partner maybe?).

It was a really hideous installation. I would have taken pictures but the customer (a nursery school) would have been mortified.

Arthur - Thank you for the intervention. I'm glad I'm not ready for "the home" yet.

Sam

He mentioned backbone cable which I would assume to be between closets. Then again, you know what happens when you assume!
Not sure why they would want that on patch panels vs 66 or 110 but it's not my install.

Jeff, you're correct. He does say backbone. My bad.

In retrospect I did a job for Time-Life at their Rock Center headquarters with patch panels. It was a cluster*ck.

It went this way -

Them: We want the 600 pair of house cable to this floor terminated on patch panels.

Me: Very well. These are 4 pair 568A panels. Do you want all 4 pair termed per jack? Your phones only use one or two pair.

Them: Hmm. We'll get back to you.

Me: (A week later) So?

Them: OK. Only term 2 pair per jack.

Me: Which two pair? Blue and Orange?

Them: We'll get back to you.

Me: (a week later) Well?

Them: OK Blue and Brown.

Me: OK. I can make this come out however you want, but I would recommend that you spare off the V/S pair. This way each binder will use 12 jacks and it will make it much easier (for your in-house crew) to cross connect from the MDF. (BTW, the MDF was a wire wrap frame dating back to the original Dan-Ray installation).

Them: Oh, No. We want every pair used.

Me: OK, whatever you want. Please put it in writing.

Them: ( 2 weeks after cutover) Why did you do it this way? Its a nightmare for our switchmen!

Me: See here where you specifically requested it this way....

I imagine I put the idea of house cable on patch panels out of my mind because the experience at Time-Life was so horrible. The thing people hate most of all is a smug SOB who says "See, I told you so."

That's the one. Time-Life installed it in 1978.

You can buy "patch cords" for 110 blocks.
Like so:

https://www.connectworld.net/mcc/1101.html

Not sure how much they are, I use them to test voice cable length for runs that a data didn't accompany, work well.
