As I was looking for odds and ends on eBay, I came across this: https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320402763545 What would this panel be used for? I understand the general concept of a 1A2 system, I just don't know where this unit would be used. Thanks, Nelson

My guess is that it is a position to be used in a 911, answering service, stock trading or ACD turret. I've never seen these before, but I'm sure that one of our New York friends will recognize it right away.

Beats me. Maybe Arthur might recognize it.
It looks like a standard 6 button set with a flash key and maybe a headset button.
It does not appear to be rack mountable, so I'm guessing it dropped into some sort of fancy angled desk unit. Maybe an ACD, though they were often single line sets. Traders turrets were usually 50/100/200 button phones. Same goes for Answering services, which were also large sets (or cord boards) because in pre- CID days dedicated lines were the only way you knew who people were calling.
I've installed similar units in racks in data centers, so maybe that's what it is.

Used to see these in the Exexitive offices at Edison in Rosemead Cal.set in very expensive high class desk. We were not allowed to remove them for repair work their maintanace people would pop them out for us.

Well, thanks for the information. I almost bid on it, but I don't need it. I already have a barn full of stuff that I don't really need.
Jim, I wish I had a job where I had one of these in my desk! I'm lucky to have a 2500 set in my broom closet office.

It's what Uncle Sam said: it drops into a desk top that accepts the panel, and it sits flush. I know the seller personally (he's a member of our clubs and he runs the JKL Museum of Telephony) You want to see phones??? Click the link for the museum, and prepare to be amazed. museum I emailed him too late to get some more info about the phone, as I had never seen one quite like it, although it appears to have been a factory item, not a Frankenfone. It's not rack-mountable, has no apparent model number, and there's no amphenol on it. I have no idea how one would hook it up without one, and the auction ended too late to get more photos. Without the model number, we can't even look for it in the AT&T practices.
