Hi guys, after many months I was able to hunt down an MLX-82 for caller ID on our IDS 84. I have everything programmed per the manual and things aren't working. I've read a few posts about using ground isolation devices, but I'm not sure what type of device and where it should be installed. Should I be using an isolation transformer on the power? Or should I be using an isolator on the RS232 port? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

What version of 84 software are you running?
Do you have the Caaller ID software download?

It's running version 8.2.4, which includes the CID option. I've checked and rechecked the configuration and it all seems correct. When the MLX-82 is plugged into a laptop running Hyperterminal, the output from an incoming call is displayed. When plugged into the IDS 84, the Data light on the MLX-82 flashes as if the data were sent, but it's not displayed on the Operator Terminal or any of the ringing phones. I know the DB9 to RJ45 cable is right because it's the same cable I use for the Operator Terminal only with a DB9 to DB25 adapter on it.

This leads me to believe I may have a ground loop, as this seems to be common with the MLX-82. I just need to know what type of ground isolator to install. Any ideas? Thanks.

Did you program the port that you are sending the caller id data into?

We have the I/O port expansion card installed. The MLX-82 is connected to Port 2, which is programmed at 4800 baud, 8-N-1, Computer Port Y and Type 080. The dip switches on the MLX-82 are programmed the same. We've got a total of three CO lines connected, lines 1, 2, and 3. They are programmed into the Terminal 02 page on the CID [B] page.

Well I figured it out. Seems the DB9 end of the cable had a short in it. I checked it repeatedly with an ohm meter and it would only short when it was in just the right position, go figure. Now I have the CID info being transmitted to the phones.

The next problem is getting it to go to the Infostar voicemail. When a message is left, the envelope information says the call is from "An outside party" rather than the number which displays on the CID. The Infostar is connected via in-band signalling. Will this work for the CID info or do I need to be using RS232 integration? I seem to remember something about the IDS system being able to send DTMF tones over the analog lines for the CID. Any clues?

Maybe I've misunderstood the "outside party" quote. I looked at the Infostar manual and it's not clear whether it supports the CID information or not. In the past, messages which were forwarded between subscribers say they were sent by that subscriber. Maybe the outside party quote applies to all calls which aren't from subscribers???
