Is there a glossary for all the acronyms used in this industry and in particular to various aspects of Inter-Tel Access systems to which I might be referred? I'm more than willing to read every thread on this board before I post my ignorant questions in case I can glean enough to figure it out without bothering you all. However, I am sometimes finding that I don't understand some of what I'm reading because I'm not up on the terminology and acronyms in use.

I'd also love some real basics about major topics. I realize this really isn't a newbie board, and I appreciate the warm weclome I'm enjoying. Here is a topic for which I'd love to have a general overview:

Unified Messaging - what are the components required, and how does it basically work, and what are "the usual suspects" for non-functionality issues. Does it require Exchange to send voice mail to email? Suppose I want to have only the mailboxes which are not associated with person's phones (general department mailboxes) send emails. And when the voice mail has been sent to email, does it still sit there filling up the voice mail box unless someone goes in and clears it?

Thanks again!

Most acronyms for the Axxess can be found in your administarators guide. And you will not bother any in here, as we are all here to help as much as we can. There are some items, that even with programming on site, that are to detailed to attempt to guide you into doing on this board, in an e-mail, or even over the phone. So if I, or anyone else tells you that you need a tech to come do it, it is not that we are getting paid from that tech, it is just that a mistake made, while programming, can shut a system down, and your company could lose money. All said, I will assist you as much as I can.

I will hit on the basics of UM. It is mainly a software program, with a dongle (small item that connects to the back of the VM normally) and number of users is decided by the number of licenses purchased. So yes, you could just assign it to your general mailboxes, and yes the message will remain in the VM till you delete them either in outlook or on the phone.
Now that said about UM, I will admit that I am not an expert on UM, so this info, which I think is correct, may not be 100%, and an Inter-Tel rep could answer your questions better, but I do think I gave you the basics.

In UM you can also have the voicemail sent to your email as an attachment and have it deleted from the voicemail, but if for any reason the email becomes undeliverable or corrupted in the process the original voicemail is gone for good.

Just to add a little info to the thread... The Voice Mail will hold a deleted message for a period of time - I think it is 1 hour by default. We always change that to 24 hours. If using UM and you don't get the message, you would then still have up 24 hours to get it via voice mail. Has saved us a couple of times - much better to have a customer that is very thankful they could still get the message, than one pissed off about "your phone system". (Why is still "our" phone system when it has a problem but it is "their" car when that has a problem?)

I guess I need to get hold of one of these Administrator's guides, huh?

Understood. (That old saw about lawyers representing themselves having a fool for a client comes to mind!)

I'm really embarrassed to admit this... but last night, I walked around the back of the rack of equipment and observed a rather significant omission on the part of our former high and mighty network engineer... the danged voice mail computer is NOT ON THE NETWORK. (Things like this explain why he's FORMER!)Air conductivity failure!

Once I have that rectified, things will either work, or it will be worthwhile to track down the other issues contributing.
