Also a little off topic but.....

I always carried my fibre Telephone Repairmans Tool Case. When I worked Electrical though I needed a somewhat different bunch of tools and certainly less small tools so the trays with the little slots didn't work. So I used a Klein 5102-14 canvas bag. It was big enough for a couple of screwdrivers, side cutters, two pairs of Channellocks, a hacksaw, etc.

I was in the electrical supply house one day around the millenium when I saw a gaggle of young Japanese (women) tourists looking over the Klein tool bags. I waited till they were finished and asked the counterman "WTF?"

His answer was that this was the newest stylish trend in Tokyo. All the young girls were buying the 12" Klein bag and using it for a pocketbook! They found if they bought it on vacation in NYC it was about 20% of the price in Tokyo.

Fashion. Style. go figure.

Carl

they are pricey but there well designed and well made . If they can save you time seems like the ROI would be worth it

How often do you "buy" a new tool bag?
Spend the extra money, it will be worth it.

And a pouch with scissors and a knife on my belt. I spent too many nights with a sore back while working service at Rogers having to wear a pouch with all my tools. Now all my hand tools come with me with small parts in the tray and the big tools stay in the van until needed.

I use a bag similar to that BUT in it I carry my pouch with tools. When I need to wear the pouch I just pull it out and strap it on. Otherwise everything is handy in the bag which also can hold a flashlight, toner, plug press and other tools that won't fit in the pouch. The tray is great for UR and UY splices, modular plugs, screws, keystone jacks, etc.

Best of both worlds.

Yeah, I used to have a small pouch that clipped to the side of the bag but even that started to bother me.

I keep my punch tool, snips, probe pic, and cable knife in this pouch, inside my tool bag:

I also have this one, with the flashlight loop, but I do not carry it.

I went through and picked out the items that others are using for "just a regular service call and not an install" like the OP asked,

I came up with:

crimper. plug press
punchdown tool
mix of 6p4c and 8p8c modular plugs
klein 10-in-1,
straight and phillps screwdrivers
sharpie
carpenter's pencil
micro flathead (screw terminals)
can wrench
needle nose
flush cutters
electrical tape
small roll of velcro
small pill bottle with bridge clips
scotch locks
ideal vdv tester
buttset
3 rolls of cross-connect
toner and wand
line cords
scotchlook crimper,
knife,
pick. probe,
scissors,
cable cutter,
pliers,
parts boxes
Paladin PT-525
flashlight
plug press
UR and UY splices
screws
keystone jacks
small drill

I am ready to put together "regular service call and not an install" kit using this list.

With all the variables involved, I am amazed when any voice and data technology works like it is supposed to.

I have a Brother PT-7600 that I use for everyday, the labels are in my under seat box in the van. Scotchlocks are crimped with the extra big needle-nose because I seldom use them (I use 709-SD's), I have the EZ-Crimp tool and carry the AMP insert for handset plugs. My plastic case of choice is the Husky one from Homo Dumpo, but I still carry a Gamefisher (Plano plastic) box with trays under the plastic and 6 parts boxes inside, but normally for service I have one of those 5x9 boxes for small parts.

In my tool pouch that I wear on my belt, I have cable cutters, punch tool, can wrench, dikes, scissors, combo screwdriver, and probe. In my tote, is just about everything else, toner, flashlight, buttset, meter, drill, screw and nut drivers, the big needlenose, crimpers, breakout box for 8-pin, sometimes spare jacks, sometimes jumper wire, markers, etc.

Someday, I'll just have to take glossy pictures of my stash.
