I have worked with cable as pictured a few times but not in a very long while. I think it was at St Paul's College in Lawrenceville Va.

Chris, if you strip the lead back a ways you'll see the way that the pairs are arranged, and see the color code. You need to use paper tape (like masking tape) and wrap a few times around the end of the wires to keep them from unwinding.
To remove the lead sheath, take a knife and score around the sheath about 6 or 8 inches back from the end. Then gently bend it to & fro a few times and the lead will snap apart, allowing you to slide it off the end of the cable.

Arthur, next time I'm in that cellar I'll try to get a long enough piece so I can strip it as you said and get the idea. I think there's some I can remove without ruining the setup. I wanted to leave everything as intact as I can. What can you tell me about the older color code of the plastic cables. They have colors and tracers like modern cable, but it's the old code. I've heard of even count and odd count, but I don't know what that means. There's a ton of this 16 pair plastic stuff down there, and if I can make heads or tails of the color code I'll use it for my 1A2 system. 16 pair is plenty for a six button phone. That stuff is so chaotic that it's not of any artistic, historic, or intrinsic value in that building. I have no qualms about tearing it out and reusing it, and the owners don't care either.

Bet Arthur know, or can find the answer to that. I only had to splice it twice and all new stuff was pulp or standard count.
