I was having an issue with a pset line; I had the provider come over several times to fix the line and could not get it to work. I tone the line without fail and also detected no shorts. I know the pset lines required a 3 pair perfect line setup (3 pairs; voice, data, and power). When the provider told me it was an cpe issue I requested their best tech to meet me at the site. I took the tech to the dmark and I plug a working pset phone (muitple working pset phone where used) to the line facing the providers CO, no dial tone. Yet the tech plug his pset tester I and was able hear a dial tone, yet no pset phone was able to work. The tech did not know what to tell me except that it was both a CO and a inside line issue. After repeated arguments with the provider that it is a line or cpe issue. I decided to switch the cross connects and disconnected the pset line. I then connected a working analog line to the users jack and told the user they can deal with a simple analog phone. No problems with the line after that.

Are you talking about an ISDN PSet?

With 3 pair Sam? Reason I asked if this is Verizon (to answer my own question- has to be in NYC), I'll bet that since this is antiquated technology they don't have anybody left that really knows how to troubleshoot it plus they want to get rid of that customer anyway. Verizon doesn't even want to deal with POTS or copper so what do you think you are going to get with something like this? They are probably hoping that the customer will get so fed up that they will want out of their contract which I suggest they do.

Sounds like a perfect replacement would be hosted.

I'd question the 3 pair concept. The set models he had previously posted on are 1 pair from the CO. They are considered 3 pair at the station end because they require a 6 conductor line cord as the voice goes across the center pins and the power for the display and speakerphone use the 3rd pair of the line cord. A P set adapter or test set will give dial tone on just the tip and ring pair- a standard butt set of course will not. I just gave away my last new P Phone adapter that worked with standard butt sets. They are now as rare as a competent politician. There is 1 manufacturer left out of Canada that makes a butt set that will test P Phone lines natively. They only make them in large batches as needed. Very expensive.

(SBI-145 Butt set) which I use

Dave, where does the power come from? Locally or the CO?

To the OP: are you sure there was power supplied to that phone when you were testing at the DEMARC?

Hal -

I worked with ISDN that required 3 pair - Voice, Data and (local) power.

The system was AT&T (ISDN) Centrex. (in NYC)

Could be a true 3 pair then. Hmmm. The ones down here have a power plant transformer bank either in the MDFs/IDFs or each station had a plug in transformer with an adapter that plugged into the wall outlet and the P Phone silver satin plugged into the adapter. But they are using Nortel M5216, 5316, 5212, or 5208 telephones. The COs are upgraded DMS100/SL100s. Curious since the original poster mentioned the Nortel phones in earlier posts.

Ok. No doubt that's what the OP has then.

As I said in your later post, Polarity will make a difference. Although the Pset adaptors will work with either polarity, the actual phones will not.

If you can, pick up an M5208. It doesn't require power and makes for quick testing at the NID.
