Can't remember where but I came across a discussion board for sat installers awhile back. There were subs for Direct and Dish and all they did was complain about how they were getting screwed. Didn't sound like anything I would want to get into.

If you work on your own I don't think you will have these problems. I was in contact with an outfit called All-Systems about a year ago for XM Radio. They also handle (I believe) Dish. Don't know what the discount is on equipment or the commission. There are some requirements like having a storefront and probably sales quotas. Easy enough to find out, give them a call 800-836-4590.

Here's the web site:

https://www.satelliteguys.us/index.php?

The company I work for is the largest HSP for DirecTV in the country, but I don't work on that side of things. However, just generally:

- Our techs roll 7/365, regardless of the weather.

- Pay is nothing like it once was, but that's the same in telecom, IT, etc. so you already know that.

- I don't know how well we pay our subcontractors, but the company techs don't make much, unless they are really hungry. It's a great job for a kid with a HS diploma and a lot of drive, but it's definitely not for everyone.

- If you are subbing for a retail outlet, there can be hassles, as the salespeople will promise the moon to a buyer. I'm not sure if that's a lack of ethics or simply not knowing the product and it's limitations.

We've bought out a couple of our subs in the last year, so that's always an option in the long run...

I don't see where that helped out. It doesn't tell him who to contact to get into the business.

Um, you don't think the members of a satellite board (see link above) would better be able to tell him that, as opposed to the members of this board?
