I just took a new job installing DSL and T1's for different companies, I have experience with networking and configuring computers for this task but I don't have a lot experience in determing the different terminology for the phone systems and also determing which wiring sets are which. I could use a little help in this area to be able to track down a usable line pair and what is the best way to tell that there might be a secondary closet etc, especially if the tenant swears no way there is not another secondary closet in the building.
Also any tricks of the trade would be very useful.
Thanks in advance.

Kind of like taking a job as a lifeguard and not knowing how to swim isn't it?
If you don't have any experience with wiring it's going to be real tough to tell you what to look for. This is given by the infinite possibilities provided by the rogues gallery of characters who install wiring these days.
I can tell you what I would do after looking at the job but that is based on years of experience.

Hal is correct, There really are not tricks to the trade when it comes to finding spare pairs, you either know what your doing or you don't. Do you mind me asking who you are working for and why aren't they supplying you with the training?

Hal is correct. We learn cabling infrastucture early in training. And if you're dealing w/t1's. you got problems. Who know where yuo local carrier put the smart jack. Good luck.

Depends who you're working for. If its the telco provider your dmark is where the cable comes into the building and then its up to the interconnect to bring the line to where it's needed. At least that's the way it works in this part of the world.
If YOU have to route to the room where the phone system is located, there is no cut and dry proceedure. Use your eyes looking for marking and notes left by previous installers. A good toner will be your best friend.

I know that this has been discussed before, but I just can't help jumping into this with the same old comment.
Why are we helping thig guy with even something like telling him to get a toner. This guy had the balls or stupidity to take a job he is OBVIUOSLY totally unqualified to do. The very definition of a trunk slammer that is driving down the price we can charge and even more importantly driving down the value and respect for our hard earned knowledge and expertise.
