Yes, the handshake retry message comes faster  I am also trying to connect to a CIX40 Does the message mean that the baud rate is wrong or could it be the password?

if you enter the wrong password it will tell you invalid password

I finally gave up on the direct serial link approach and went with a modem. It seems like the interface for the GVPH1A is a left-over from another box.
PC UART speed was a factor. I ran at 9600, 19200, and 38400 without a problem. Did not try 57600.
